General Observations about Gstaad International School in Switzerland.
GIS is a unique international boarding school which caters for a diverse cohort of high school students from around the world. In an important sense it is a "Boutique" school located where the highest of standards are expected.
The controlled scale of the operation favours a student-centred approach with a greater level of supervision and attention than that found in a typical boarding school. This has enabled students to achieve outcomes beyond those in their learning plans, evidence of a high level of educational "value added." It is unlikely that our students would achieve such results in the more traditional type of educational establishment and this is clearly recognised by parents who entrust their children to GIS for this very reason.GIS has deliberately established itself as a learning environment which meets the aspirations of parents and students through a well-constructed and monitored curriculum and extra-curricular programme which ensures that its students develop, not only academically, but also as human beings.
A united staff shares the philosophy of the owners, who monitor and participate in all aspects of school. GIS is a community of learners who share the learning experience and mature as they do so. It is understood and accepted that GIS will never provide for a mass market and will need to maintain its intimate atmosphere and its focus on the individual if it is to maintain the current high level of achievement and rates of progress. With the sensitive and flexible approach that is established here, staff are able to concern themselves with student"s personal development as well as their academic progress. For students there is much to gain from the particular care and teaching expertise at GIS; for parents there is good value and security in return for their investment in their child"s education, the most important gift they can provide. |
